Morocco is a year-round destination, but choosing the right time to visit can make the difference between a good trip and an extraordinary one. From scorching summer days in the Sahara to snow-capped Atlas peaks in winter, Morocco’s climate varies dramatically depending on when and where you go.
In this guide, we break down each month of the year so you can plan your Morocco trip with confidence — whether you are chasing desert sunsets, mountain hikes, coastal breezes or cultural festivals.
Spring: March, April and May — The Best Time for Most Travellers
Spring is widely considered the best time to visit Morocco. Temperatures are warm but comfortable (20-28 degrees Celsius in most regions), the landscape is green from winter rains, and the tourist crowds have not yet reached their peak.
March
March marks the beginning of spring. The Atlas Mountains still have snow at the highest peaks, creating stunning contrasts with the green valleys below. The Sahara Desert is at a perfect temperature for camel treks — warm during the day (around 25 degrees) and cool at night. This is an excellent month for a desert tour from Marrakech.
April
April is arguably the single best month to visit Morocco. The Rose Festival takes place in the Dades Valley (usually mid-April), the almond trees are in bloom and every landscape looks its best. Hotel prices begin to rise but availability is still good.
May
May is warm and sunny across the country. The desert is starting to heat up but morning and evening temperatures remain pleasant. Cities like Marrakech and Fes reach around 30 degrees. It is a great month for combining city exploration with a desert trip.
Summer: June, July and August — Coastal and Mountain Season
Summer in Morocco is hot — particularly inland. Marrakech regularly exceeds 40 degrees Celsius and the Sahara can reach 50 degrees. However, the Atlantic coast (Essaouira, Agadir) and the Atlas Mountains
remain comfortable and offer a refreshing escape.
If you plan to visit the desert in summer, choose early morning and late evening activities. Many tour operators (including us) adjust schedules to avoid the midday heat. Summer is also when Moroccan families holiday, so coastal towns are lively and festive.
Autumn: September, October and November — The Second Best Season
Autumn is the second-best time to visit Morocco, with temperatures cooling to comfortable levels after the summer heat. October is particularly popular — the desert is warm but not extreme, the cities are pleasant and the crowds thin out after the European summer holidays.
September sees the last of the summer heat, but by October the country transforms. The light is golden, the air is clear and conditions are perfect for both desert tours and mountain hiking. November brings the first rains, which make the Atlas particularly beautiful.
Winter: December, January and February — Quiet and Affordable
Winter is the quietest season in Morocco, which means lower prices, fewer tourists and a more authentic experience. The desert can be cold at night (dropping to near freezing) but daytime temperatures remain comfortable at around 18-22 degrees. The Atlas Mountains receive snowfall, making them spectacular for photography and offering skiing at Oukaimeden.
Cities like Marrakech and Fes are mild in winter (15-20 degrees) and far less crowded than in spring or autumn. If you do not mind cooler evenings, winter is an underrated time to visit.
Our Recommendation:
For the best all-round experience, visit Morocco in April, May, October or November. These months offer the perfect balance of weather, crowd levels and landscape beauty. If you are specifically interested in a Sahara desert tour, March through May and September through November are ideal.
