4-Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – Tizi n’Tichka – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Rose Valley – Dades Valley

Your Marrakech Fes Desert Tour begins with morning pickup from your hotel, riad or an accessible meeting point in Marrakech.

You will leave the city and travel across the High Atlas Mountains through the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass, situated approximately 2,260 metres above sea level.

Stops will be made at panoramic viewpoints where you can admire the mountains and traditional Amazigh villages.

Your first major destination will be Ait Ben Haddou, a historic fortified village recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ksar is famous for its traditional earthen architecture and has appeared in numerous international films and television productions.

You will have time to explore the village before stopping for lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, you will continue to Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Morocco.” Depending on the available time, you can stop for photographs near Atlas Studios and enjoy a panoramic view of Kasbah Taourirt.

The journey continues through Skoura and the Rose Valley toward Kelaat M’Gouna and Boumalne Dades.

You will arrive at your hotel or guesthouse in the Dades Valley in the late afternoon or early evening. Dinner will be served at your accommodation.

Overnight: Dades Valley
Meals: Dinner

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Tinejdad – Erfoud – Merzouga

After breakfast, you will leave the Dades Valley and travel toward Tinghir. Along the way, you will enjoy panoramic views of mountain landscapes, traditional villages and fertile valleys.

You will continue to Todra Gorge, where limestone cliffs rise dramatically on both sides of the river. Some sections of the canyon reach approximately 300 metres in height.

You will have time for a short walk through the gorge before continuing toward Tinejdad, where a lunch break will be arranged.

In the afternoon, you will travel to Erfoud, a desert town known for fossils, minerals and date production. Depending on your interests, you may visit a local fossil workshop to learn about the prehistoric specimens found throughout the region.

The Marrakech Fes Desert Tour then continues to Merzouga at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes.

If you have selected the optional camel ride, you will ride across the dunes while watching the sunset. Travelers who do not choose the camel experience can be transferred to the camp by 4WD vehicle.

At the desert camp, you will enjoy dinner and traditional Amazigh music around the fire before spending the night in a private tent beneath the Sahara sky.

Overnight: Merzouga desert camp
Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Day 3: Merzouga – Desert Nomads – Khamlia – Erg Chebbi Exploration

We recommend waking up early to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. After breakfast, you will begin a complete exploration of the Merzouga region by 4WD vehicle.

You will travel around the dunes and visit panoramic areas near some of Erg Chebbi’s highest dunes. The route may also follow sections previously used during desert rally events.

The journey continues toward the Tissardmine oasis, fossil areas and remote desert settlements. You will have an opportunity to meet local nomadic families and learn respectfully about their traditions, daily lives and adaptation to the Sahara environment.

You will then visit Khamlia, a village known for its Gnawa musical heritage. The local community preserves musical traditions connected to the historic movement of people and caravans across the Sahara.

You can enjoy tea while listening to a live Gnawa music performance before returning toward Merzouga.

The remainder of the afternoon is free for relaxation at your hotel. Optional activities such as quad biking and dune buggies can be arranged at an additional cost.

Dinner will be served at your hotel or riad near the dunes.

Overnight: Hotel or riad in Merzouga
Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Day 4: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Cedar Forest – Ifrane – Fes

After breakfast, you will leave Merzouga and begin the final journey north toward Fes.

You will pass through the Tafilalet region, known for its extensive palm groves and historic connection to trans-Saharan trade routes.

The road then follows the Ziz Valley, where you will stop at a panoramic viewpoint to admire the palm-filled oasis, traditional villages and surrounding mountains.

You will continue through Errachidia and cross the eastern mountain landscapes toward Midelt. A lunch break will be arranged in Midelt or another suitable location along the route.

In the afternoon, you will travel through the Middle Atlas cedar forests. If conditions allow, you may see native Barbary macaques living among the trees. Visitors should avoid touching or feeding the animals.

Your final stop will be Ifrane, a peaceful mountain town known for its alpine-style architecture, landscaped gardens and cool climate.
