3-Day Erg Chigaga Desert Tour from Marrakech

Erg Chigaga Desert Tour Overview

The Erg Chigaga Desert Tour is a private three-day adventure from Marrakech to one of Morocco’s most remote and impressive desert regions.

Travel across the High Atlas Mountains, explore Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, and follow the beautiful Draa Valley toward Zagora. Visit Tamegroute and Mhamid before continuing off-road to the wild Erg Chigaga dunes.

Experience a sunset camel ride, traditional dinner, Amazigh music and an overnight stay in a private desert tent. On the final day, cross the remote landscapes of Iriqui National Park before returning to Marrakech through Foum Zguid and Taznakht.

Unlike the more developed Merzouga region, Erg Chigaga offers a quieter and more isolated Sahara experience surrounded by vast dunes and open desert landscapes.

3-Day Erg Chigaga Desert Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Draa Valley – Zagora

Your Erg Chigaga Desert Tour begins with morning pickup from your hotel, riad or an accessible meeting point in Marrakech.

You will leave the city and travel across the High Atlas Mountains through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Several stops will be made at panoramic viewpoints where you can admire the mountain scenery and traditional Amazigh villages.

Your first major destination will be Ait Ben Haddou, a historic fortified village recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ksar is famous for its traditional earthen architecture and has appeared in numerous international films and television productions.

You will have time to walk through the village, cross the river and climb toward its upper section for impressive views of the surrounding landscape.

The journey then continues to Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Morocco” because of its film studios and connection to international cinema. Depending on the available time, you can stop for lunch or arrange an optional visit to a film studio.

After Ouarzazate, you will cross the Anti-Atlas Mountains toward Agdez and enter the Draa Valley. This region is known for its extensive palm groves, historic kasbahs and traditional villages situated along the Draa River.

In the late afternoon, you will arrive in Zagora. Dinner will be served at your hotel or guesthouse, where you will spend the first night.

Overnight: Zagora
Meals: Dinner

Day 2: Zagora – Tamegroute – Mhamid – Erg Chigaga Dunes

After breakfast, you will leave Zagora and continue through the Draa Valley toward Tamegroute.

Tamegroute is known for its historic religious library, traditional green pottery and underground kasbah. Depending on opening conditions, you can visit the library and learn about its collection of historic manuscripts.

You may also visit a local pottery workshop to see how Tamegroute’s distinctive green ceramics are produced using traditional methods.

The journey continues to Mhamid, one of the last settlements before the open Sahara. Mhamid historically served as an important departure point for caravans traveling across the desert.

After lunch in the area, you will leave the paved road and begin the off-road journey toward Erg Chigaga. This section passes rocky desert landscapes, open plains and small dunes before reaching the larger sand dunes.

Upon arrival, you will meet your camel guide and begin a camel trek through the Sahara. You will stop among the dunes to watch the sunset and take photographs.

At the desert camp, you will enjoy traditional Moroccan hospitality, dinner and Amazigh music around the fire. You will then spend the night in a private tent beneath the desert sky.

Overnight: Erg Chigaga desert camp
Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Day 3: Erg Chigaga – Iriqui National Park – Foum Zguid – Taznakht – Marrakech

We recommend waking up early to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chigaga dunes. After breakfast at the camp, you will begin the return journey to Marrakech.

The route continues off-road through the wild landscapes of Iriqui National Park. You will cross wide desert plains and pass near Lake Iriqui, a seasonal lakebed whose appearance varies according to rainfall and weather conditions.

This remote region was historically used by nomadic communities and migratory wildlife. Its open landscapes offer a very different experience from Morocco’s mountain valleys and urban centers.

You will continue toward Foum Zguid, a quiet desert town where the off-road section ends. From there, the journey proceeds by paved road toward Taznakht.

Taznakht is well known for its handmade Amazigh carpets and weaving traditions. Depending on the available time, you may stop at a local carpet cooperative to learn about the designs, materials and production techniques.

After lunch, you will continue across mountain landscapes and traditional villages toward Marrakech. Stops will be made for photographs, refreshments and comfort breaks.

You will arrive in Marrakech in the evening. The exact arrival time depends on traffic, weather, road conditions and the duration of stops.

Drop-off will be arranged at your hotel, riad or the closest accessible location, marking the end of your Erg Chigaga Desert Tour.
